Porthole Mirror:
My great-uncle Ronald dreamt all his life of being a ship’s captain, but a tendency to suffer from seasickness, combined with the opposition of my wonderful Aunt Jessica, led him to drop anchor at a sheep farm somewhere in the middle of a vast, deserted corner of the Australian subcontinent. After the discovery of gold and duranium on his land, Uncle Ronald was finally able to indulge all his whims. He immediately set about building the superstructure of a Victorian-style ocean liner in his yard, complete with a funnel and a full wheelhouse. His favourite outfit became white trousers and a white jacket, embroidered in gold, naturally. He would stroll along the bridge with a marine telescope under his arm, surveying his territory, which was at times so hot that all the legends about mirages seemed to pale in comparison to reality. Believe it or not, my uncle sometimes took pleasure in gazing out over a vast expanse of shimmering water, but only on the hottest of days. Uncle Ronald collected portholes and felt somewhat offended when Aunt Jessica refused to replace the panoramic windows in the main house with solid brass cabin portholes.
