Richly carved wooden ironing board, marked ANNO 1796 – Swiss
folk art. The ironing board belongs to the category of objects used for laundry care.
Also known as a ‘smoothing board’, it consists of a thick rectangular wooden slab, carved from a single piece of wood. It measures between 60 and 80 cm in length and between 12 and 15 cm in width. The side that comes into contact with the linen is either smooth, grooved or serrated.
For ease of use, it is fitted with a relatively short handle or shaft, and there is sometimes a knob or grip at the opposite end to the handle, so that the woman can apply greater pressure and weight to the laundry being ironed, as she moved it back and forth.
