Armillary Sphere: Early humans, gazing at the sky, believed that the stars were fixed to the inner surface of a rotating sphere. Copernicus lent his name to the theory of a Earth-centred universe, and the Vatican propagated this belief by threatening to burn scientific heretics who asserted the contrary. We now know that we live on the edge of an almost infinite and constantly expanding universe. On armillary spheres, the Earth is placed within a network of bronze rings, symbolising the paths of the planets as they were understood at the time. The Sun’s path is indicated by a broad band known as the ecliptic circle.
