In 1838, Sir Charles Wheatstone invented the stereoscope, an instrument that allowed drawings to be viewed from two different angles, creating a three-dimensional effect.
The development of photography transformed the stereoscope, which had been nothing more than a scientific curiosity, into a favourite pastime of the upper middle classes from 1850 onwards. This model is a reproduction of the one made by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1862.
