Pair of marine oil paintings on wood, ‘Cape St Vincent’, by NOOTEBOOM (Jacobus H. J., 1811–1878)
The Battle of Cape St Vincent was a naval engagement fought on 5 July 1833 off the Portuguese coast during the Portuguese Civil War (1828–1834). A liberal squadron, commanded by the British admiral Charles Napier, defeated the fleet of King Michael I there.
