A round, retro-style frame on a stand, featuring a domed glass panel, displays a collection of plaster intaglios in the ‘Naturalist’ style. In the 17th century, many young aristocrats and artists undertook the ‘Grand Tour’, a formative journey across Europe inspired by the Greek and Latin humanists, which enabled them to enrich their cultural knowledge and round off their education. Greece and Italy were their favourite destinations. On their return or whilst travelling, they would carve plaster intaglios ‘in the antique style’, such as those shown here.
