Models. These models were used for many years in biology and science education. Originally designed as educational tools, they are now appreciated in their own right for the quality of their craftsmanship.
The first botanical models were initially made from papier mâché by the German firm of Robert and Reinhold Brendel during the second half of the 19th century. The Brendels produced models of enlarged flowers that were both accurate and beautiful in their workshops in Breslau and Berlin. Plaster of Paris, wood, cotton, rattan, felt and beads were their basic materials. Some models also depicted the reproductive organs (stamens and pistils), as well as the seeds, in addition to the complete flower.
These models were then used in natural history lessons in schools and colleges. Today, highly sought-after and extremely rare, these antique flower models fetch astronomical prices at major international auctions.
The stems can be removed from their stands so that the details can be examined more closely. Made from papier-mâché and hand-painted, they are stained and finished with an attractive patina.
