Supermarine Spitfire The Supermarine Spitfire was a British fighter aircraft put into production in 1938 by the Supermarine division of Vickers Armstrong Ltd. It was used throughout the Second World War by the Allies, primarily by the RAF. A total of 20,340 aircraft were built. The Spitfire is distinguished by its aerodynamic design and elliptical wings. The aircraft is best known for the decisive role it played during the Battle of Britain.
