The Messerschmitt BF 109 was a German fighter aircraft. It was first deployed during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and was used by the German Luftwaffe and its allies during the Second World War. At the time of its deployment, the aircraft was one of the most advanced in the world. It featured an all-metal monocoque construction, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. With around 34,000 units produced, the BF 109 is the most widely produced fighter aircraft of all time. The Messerschmitt BF 109 was designed in the 1930s by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. The aircraft was originally designed as an interceptor, but later models were also capable of fulfilling other roles, such as escort fighter, fighter-bomber, night fighter, ground-attack aircraft or reconnaissance aircraft.
