A Napoleon III-style smoking chair in gilded wood, upholstered in antique
tapestry, also known as a ‘ponteuse’
chair. Dating from the 18th century, it was used around a gaming table, hence its name, which derives from the term ‘ponter’, meaning to bet. It is a particularly narrow chair, especially at the rear of the seat, with a high backrest topped by a padded armrest concealing a box of betting chips.
